I am Järvenpää based visual artist who has license to teach. I teach the art line now for the third year at the Järvenpää High School. Art line students studies five courses in two years. During these courses students will have the opportunity to explore the wide field of visual culture from contemporary art to traditional painting and sculpture to digital image processing.
At the time I am finishing my MA studies in Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture. My master thesis deals with the child's representation in contemporary photography and popular culture.

One of my responsibilities besides teaching, is to plan and organize art courses that are held to all students of our High School. In Finnish High School curriculum, every student must go through three art courses. These compulsory studies are arranged in a way that a student can choose whether to study two art classes and one music class or vice versa. Also other forms of art are equally available for choosing, such as drama and dance courses. At Järvenpää High School, it is possible for a student to choose almost ten different extra art and music courses in addition to the three compulsory courses. That makes me an "all round- teacher" in visual culture. Besides the compulsory courses, I teach graphical designing, art history, pottery and photography. I graduated from TaiK (nowadays known as Aalto University) to become an art teacher in 1974. At the time, I did my Bachelor's in art history. A few years back I also got another BA equivalent degree to become a graphical designer. In the context of our art program, there is also a 3D- graphics course (led by vice rector/math teacher Mr. Jukka Ottelin) and movie courses(led by filmmaker Mr. Sakari Mäkelä). The regular art consultant in painting and art graphics courses is Mrs. Susanna Autio.

Susanna Autio

I am a visual artist from Järvenpää, and I make sculptures, installations and prints. I prefer to use recycled or non-conventional materials such as hair, rye dough or root vegetables. My works make a statement but they do not condemn; their themes are something I find personally important like animal welfare, for example. I enjoy doing and experiencing new things and I hope I can transmit that feeling in my works. In the evenings I give lessons to adults in drawing, painting and printmaking; in the upper secondary school I teach a painting workshop and printmaking course every spring

I teach English but I have a soft spot for Visual Arts so this project provides me with the opportunity to combine two great interests in my life - studying Visual Arts using English as the language. I look forward to getting acquainted with Italian students and teachers as well as Italian modern art. Hopefully we will be able to offer a different experience to both Italian and Finnish students and to motivate each other to learn foreign languages and vocabulary required in the studying of Visual Arts.
